From the light bodied to the heavy on peat Whiskies, they have it all.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\nThe Scottish mainland is surrounded by an archipelago of nearly \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e800 Islands,\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e most of which are uninhabited. But a handful of them are home to some of \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eScotland’s greatest treasures,\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e the distilleries of Scotch Whisky. As illegal distilleries, they had to be hidden from the long arm of \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ethe King and his excisemen.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e However, these distant Islands turned out to be one of the best places to make Uisge Beatha. With the arrival of industrialisation, the \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHighlands and Speyside\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e got the upper hand, mainly due to newly built railroads and better transport connections. Slowly but surely the \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003edistant Island distilleries were closing\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e one after another and sadly not many were ever reopened.
